A process such as print head calibration refers to the precise synchronization of the movement of the printer carriage, as well as the alignment of print heads in inkjet devices.
Also, calibration is sometimes called the procedure for loading color profiles; thanks to the calibration performed, you can obtain the maximum possible similarity of the color rendering of the image on the screen and a printed sheet of paper. This procedure is also carried out for laser devices. It is produced using special color profiles separately on laser and inkjet models; it can be used to adjust the color balance to ensure the correct transmission of both colors and their shades on the device.

How to calibrate inkjet printers

Printhead calibration is not a complicated process. But it requires accuracy and consistency of actions from the user. To get a calibrated printer, use a utility called “Print Head Calibration”. Keep in mind that it will not start if the printer is busy printing documents. To align the print heads, first turn off the printer and set the paper thickness adjustment lever to the standard position. Then place several sheets of paper in the tray.

On some printers and MFPs, print head calibration can be started directly from the device menu. To do this, press the button with which you can set the number of copies and, while holding it, press the power button of the device. Following these steps will allow you to print calibration pages. On the first sheet of paper, the device will leave several rows, which will be necessarily numbered. You should choose the template in which the two lines match each other as much as possible. Then click on the button that allows you to specify the number of copies and enter the number of this template. Next, select “Copy Black and White” and, having confirmed your choice, repeat the steps described above for all pages, the number of which will be equal to four. On some printers, you may need to print a calibration sheet from your computer to align the printheads. It is necessary to ensure that the print settings are correct. The calibration scheme is the same as in the case of calibration on the device without the participation of a computer. We print, select one sample (the least grainy) in each resulting column and enter their values ​​in the appropriate fields. If you fail to select the optimal sample, then give preference to the most suitable one and click on “Recalibrate”. The device will then print a new table.

In a single print head, nozzles of different colors are rigidly fixed once and for all; their position relative to each other does not change when changing “ink tanks”.

If there are several print heads, then when changing cartridges, the relative position of the nozzles of different colors may change slightly.

The carriage (the unit where the cartridges are inserted) is usually designed so that the inserted cartridges have minimal play. But it exists! If you are using two cartridges, black and color (which usually have three colors), you may find that due to backlash, the color and black images will not completely combined.

The alignment method depends on the specific printer model and class. In earlier and simpler models, this could be done from the printer driver (control program).

You should have selected the “cartridge alignment” option (or something like that) and printed the test as dashed lines or geometric shapes.

Then select the most correct image and inform the printer driver about it.

The driver transmitted this data to the printer, and it took this into account in its further work. Then this function became embed into printer, so that head alignment could be done offline without connecting the printer to a computer.

After changing the cartridges, the printer independently feeds a sheet of paper from the input tray into the printing area and prints the test in the form of geometric shapes and colors.

Then a second pass is made over the printed image. The sensor analyzes it, transmits the data to the electronic “brain” of the printer, which makes amendments into further work.

However, most users simply change cartridges and don’t bother with any alignment. Especially if they have an HP line printer. But discerning users should be aware of this feature.

4. In the window that opens, check the “Align heads manually” checkbox.
5. Save the changes.
6. On the “Maintenance” tab, click “Print head alignment.”
7. Put in the rear tray, 3 clean slates A4 format.

Canon Printer Head Alignment

The encoder tape or positioning tape and the corresponding sensor are responsible for the position of the carriage during printing. Positioning tape is a transparent strip with lines printed on it, similar to the divisions on a school ruler. When the carriage moves, the sensor located on it reads the markings on the tape, and the PG “knows where to print. If at least one of the divisions is smeared with ink or grease, the sensor does not see it and the carriage moves horizontally more than necessary.

How to align Canon mp250 print heads?
To fix the problem, you need to wipe the positioning tape. Do this with a soft paper napkin soaked in a special liquid for washing cartridges or Mister Muscle window cleaner. Even Fairy for dishes is suitable, you just need to then wipe the encoder with a dry cloth.
Important: Do not use acetone under any circumstances: it will wash away the marks on the tape. Alcohol or vodka can also damage markings.

This printer supports two head alignment methods: automatic alignment and manual alignment. Typically, the printer is set to automatically align the heads. If printing is not satisfactory even after automatically aligning the print heads, perform head alignment manually.

Print Head Alignment

1. Open the printer driver setup window.

2. Click the Custom Settings button on the Maintenance tab.

The Custom Settings dialog box opens.

If the printer is turned off or communication between the printer and computer is disabled, an error message may appear on the screen because the computer cannot obtain printer status information.

In this case, click OK to display the latest settings configured on your computer.

12. Check the printed template.

Enter the numbers of samples with the least visible horizontal stripes in the appropriate fields.

Even if you select a sample with the least visible horizontal stripes in the viewing window, their numbers will be automatically entered in the corresponding fields.

After entering all the required values, click OK.

If you can't find the best pattern, choose the option that matches the pattern with the least noticeable horizontal stripes.
