To implement GPRS, the mobile operator requires installation, configuration and ongoing administration of various hardware and software, which together forms a special computer-mobile network. However, ordinary users should not worry about all these subtleties. To use this technology, they just need to buy a GPRS-enabled mobile phone, and I should note that almost all modern phones, even the cheapest ones, support it. After this, you need to enable the GPRS service from your operator, if it is suddenly not turned on, and then use GPRS in the tail and in the mane, if there is such a need. What does GPRS provide on a regular mobile phone/smartphone? The ability to access the Internet and connect to relevant services: Internet pages, news channels, and so on and so forth. “Wait,” you say. “What about WAP? Moreover, this fee, compared to payment for calls, is very small: approximately 10-20 cents per megabyte of data. Thus, your mobile phone can be connected to GPRS constantly - this practically does not interfere with incoming and outgoing calls, and if you do not download anything, then no money is spent from your account.

So, okay, now I think it would be better if I answer the most common questions about GPRS, so to speak, okay? So, let's go.

  1. How to disable GPRS on your phone? To disable it, you just need to not use it. If you are losing money on your phone because of the Internet, and at the same time you have a smartphone, and not some kind of phone, then most likely some application is accessing the Internet. I don’t know if there is even an option to turn off the Internet in a modern smartphone, but I know something else, you can change the Internet settings. That is, those settings that the operator sent you, change the APN access point there, and something else. All this can be changed somehow, as long as it is wrong and as a result the Internet will not work. You need to look in the settings for something like Internet profiles. If something happens, then it’s easy to set it back up, you just order automatic settings and that’s all, but you don’t have to delete the old, incorrect ones, but leave them just for the purpose of shutting down the Internet, so to speak. There should be an option in the smart phone to switch between these settings.
  2. How much does GPRS cost? This means that GPRS is charged not by time, but by megabytes. One megabyte costs a decent amount, I can’t say for sure, I don’t know anymore, but it’s generally expensive. But now there are all sorts of tariffs, Internet packages, each operator has their own, you need to find out. There is also such a service as unlimited Internet for a day, but again, if the phone and operator support 3G, then the Internet will be fast. And if the phone does not receive 3G, then the Internet will use GPRS technology. But I’ll say right away that GPRS is still not suitable for watching a movie online, downloading something, or listening to music online, you should forget about it. No, in principle, some things are possible, but it will all take a long time and you will quickly get bored, and the speed may be quite unstable. Social media, all sorts of instant messengers, Skype and Viber (text only), that's all, yes, it can all work somehow. Regarding Skype, by the way, I once tried to call via the GPRS Internet, but then I used this Internet on a computer, so just think, Skype worked, sometimes it stuttered, of course, but it worked. How it is now, I don’t know =)
  3. What is the speed of GPRS? This means the maximum speed, well, in general, what is possible under the best conditions and if the stars shine correctly, then this is 171.2 kbit/s. But as you understand, in practice it is less. But 171.2 kb/s is only a speed, and you can download at a maximum speed of 21.4 kb/s, because 171.2/8 = 21.4, that’s the arithmetic =) After all, the speed is in kilobits, but the download is in kilobytes, and in 1 kilobyte - 8 kilobits, what a joke. Do you want another joke? Let's take a song in MP3 format, let it weigh 5 megabytes. There are 1024 kilobytes in 1 megabyte. The maximum GPRS speed is, as we have already found out, 21.4 kb/s, so now think about whether it will download quickly or not….
  4. What is the speed of EDGE? Well, here the speed is already higher, the maximum possible is 474 kbit/s, and also, as you understand, this is under the most ideal conditions. Well, the speed with which you will download is 474/8 = 59.25 kb/s, which is of course better, but it is unlikely to be the same, but if it’s half as much, that’s also not bad and the sites are still not very fast, but will open.
  5. What about 3G, what is the speed? The maximum speed under super conditions is 3.6 Mbit/s, which is already quite good. In fact, it’s less, understandably, but still not bad, and the film can already be watched in average quality, I mean online. There is also something like 3G+, this is some kind of advanced 3G, I don’t know, but the speed there is impressive, the maximum can be 63.3 Mbit/s, guys, I can’t even believe that it can have such a speed mobile internet.
  6. How to use GPRS Internet on a computer? So again, guys, everyone’s smartphones are different, but in general, the scheme is like this. You set up the Internet on your phone and check that it works. Hmm, I don’t know how it is now, I’m a little behind technology. But there are two options. You can create a Wi-Fi access point on your phone and then connect to it from your computer. The second option is to connect your phone with a USB cable to your computer and use the phone itself as a modem. A connection is created on the computer, everything is simple, but nevertheless you need to know how, by the way, operator support can help with this. So, you create a connection and then the Internet will work through the phone, the phone itself will act as a modem. If I'm not mistaken, you can still make phone calls, and the Internet will still work on your computer. But it wasn’t like this before, well, when there were still push-button telephones, with incoming call the internet was interrupted.
  7. What is the difference between GPRS and GPS? Guys, the question is not very correct. GPRS is data transfer, in short the Internet. GPS is navigation using maps, it works without the Internet, the phone has a built-in GPS module that exchanges data with satellites and, in short, finds out where you are and shows it to you on the map.
  8. What is the difference between GPRS and GSM? Well, again, GPRS is the Internet, while GSM is a completely different story... GSM is a standard for digital mobile communications. While GPRS is something that works over GSM.
  9. What is the difference between GPRS and Wi-Fi? Look, GPRS is the Internet from an operator, which can be in any modern phone, but the main thing is that the Internet goes, so to speak, along the same path as calls, well, roughly speaking, it’s all GSM. Wi-Fi is completely different, if the phone has Wi-Fi, this means that the phone can simply connect to any network and take the Internet from there. Networks may or may not have a password. For example, there seems to be Wi-Fi in the metro now, well, there is definitely somewhere. Internet via Wi-Fi has nothing to do with the operator, that is, you can access it even without a SIM card, if your phone supports it. And money for Wi-Fi will never be withdrawn, it’s kind of technically unrealistic.
  10. What is the difference between GPRS and 3G? So, well, I already wrote, it’s all about speed. And it’s probably also that not all old phones support 3G, and 3G itself is not available everywhere, where GPRS is available.
  11. What's the difference between GPRS and WAP? Oh guys, WAP is actually an ancient nightmare. In short, firstly, it’s slow, and secondly, not all sites work there at all, I don’t even remember how it is or what.. WAP is what was before GPRS, what supported even the oldest ancient phones without a color screen . That is, the Internet on a phone that does not have a color screen, it generally seems unrealistic. But then the Internet is in quotes... in general, there is also WAP 2.0, but still this is not a full-fledged Internet. In general, if I'm not mistaken, WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) works via CSD (Circuit Switched Data). But what is CSD? CSD is like GPRS, but it just appeared earlier and works about the same, but is available even on non-color phones. I’m generally silent about the speed, it’s like 9.6 kbit/s, which is terrible. Because of this speed, there had to be special pages in order to load at least somehow. And on black and white phones there were no pages at all, so what to show there, the text was just loading there. In principle, it’s normal, but I didn’t see the point in this in such an Internet, it’s easier not to use it. Although it was possible to check the weather, I also remember that back then the Internet seemed to be charged per minute... and it was not cheap.
  12. Can GPRS be different? Yes, maybe I don’t know how things are now, but I think that in all modern phones GPRS is already maximal, so to speak. In general, there is such a thing as a GPRS class; earlier, in the era of push-button phones, each phone had its own class. Therefore, for example, GPRS worked faster in one phone, slower in another. The phone may have Class 2, Class 4, Class 6 and so on. The best, that is, the fastest, is Class 12, if I'm not mistaken. But again, this all applies to older phones without a touch screen. And today, I think that all these sensors, all of them have the last GPRS class, that is, 12. These classes also apply to EDGE.
