How to use a USB fingerprint scanner. Fingerprint scanner to protect your PC. Working and active. Operating principle of a biometric reader

A device that can be used to password protect both a PC and individual files using a fingerprint. A more or less adequately functioning device.

Let me also point out at the beginning that the product was taken free of charge for review and just for fun, that is, to look at/touch. And I won’t push any kind of hidden advertising)

Personally, I bought this particular picture - what do Chinese marketers say about the device?

Don’t look, otherwise your unstable psyche may well be susceptible to a slight attack of shopaholia)

However, let's get to the point. This was the first time I received a product from this store and I must admit that it took a little longer to arrive, although it could be longer.

Unboxing video
Very poor quality, that's why it's short. Only the essence is what will come.

In words, everything is quite simple - a blister containing the scanner itself, a USB-mini USB cable, an advertising cardboard, and even instructions in English and Chinese.
The disk with the drivers is still lying carelessly inside the cardboard - it’s a disk, it’s supposed to be scratched in life, but they just like that :(
In addition to the drivers, the disk also contains a very interesting program, which I will tell you about later. I have seen a design similar to this scanner on many laptops, especially HP, so I will post the contents of the disk - anyone interested in recording something similar using the scanner built into the laptop can do this with its help.

Lots and lots of photos

Almost like a hippie in this old and wonderful song

But this is nonsense, let's get to the main thing

What can this thing do?

To do this, insert the disk and instead of photos, go to screenshots
The files on the disk are on the right. First of all, I install the driver, also known as setup

Next we install the second program, it is already in Russian. SUDDENLY. It takes an incomprehensibly long time to install, as for a program weighing 20 MB - about 5 minutes on a fairly decent system.

I'll get ahead of myself and show you system requirements from the FAK program. And yet I’m bragging a little - I have an A10 and 8 GB of RAM. Although this is all relative, it is clear that in the comments there will be owners of much more serious kits)

After all sorts of things - next, ok, next, confirm the administrator password, further, further - we get to something interesting - “calibration” of the device

As the instructions say, the device needs three identical fingerprints, which will be accepted as the standard. I passed this type of calibration without problems. The next window opens to select a finger. The program recommends doing two things at once, which is what I did. The fingers are of your own choice, so I have already tried to set different ones/remove/set new ones - without any restrictions.

How the process itself happens - you take it and run it through the scanner. Doesn't matter - in the direction of the arrow, against the arrow. Some of the norms are recognized randomly, some with lags. And, since you need 3 identical ones, it is not always possible to achieve them. With the left finger I did it the first time and without a single knot. True, I still felt unsure about all this - I went and washed my hands with soap specially before the review, just in case.

But with the right one - not the first time, only the second

Then we click further, we get this window and, in principle, that’s it.

This program is available to us

The program is multifunctional. I personally got the following:
In the data protection menu - you can encrypt the file - take the file at hand and make a securely encrypted file from it. It already sounds like it!)

And here it is on our left - a file with a lock, by clicking on which we have a choice - either the admin password or your finger

It was not possible to insert the finger right away - 3-4 attempts

But what’s interesting is that if you remove the selected fingers before this encryption and add a new one, the file will be accessible without any problems using the new fingerprint

I encrypted the PDF file, they open in Chrome. I decided to experiment a little and deleted the program. encrypted files immediately became unidentified files with an extension corresponding to the name of the program. I tried to open it with the same chrome, but no

I tried Winrar but no

I tried to remove this ending with Winrar, the doc was again recognized as a PDF, but when I tried to open it it failed

This is where my lame attempts to “break” the defense ended)

What next? Then I began to look at the program, looking for cool additional functions. I found this cool menu in the instructions

that is, you can set an action for each finger

When I restarted the PC I got the following

It was also not possible to enter the fingerprint right away

But 2-3 attempts - and everything is ok.

Total

What can we say - everything is clear. Geeky crap of a device that doesn’t seem to have much practical significance in life. I am sure that hacking this thing can be done in a similar way to the methods of hacking a PC protected by a user password. But at times, the level of knowledge of others or the factor of their laziness, if they do have knowledge, will allow them to protect themselves with such a device. But it’s still the same at times - there will be lags 100%, no matter how much you wash your hands and don’t wipe them. Once this scanner even froze - it was supposed to read a fingerprint, but instead of a measured blinking while reading it, it shone with its stripe and did not fade in any way. He cured it with banal ticking and sticking.

And let me point out again - the product was received free of charge for review. The main goal for me is banal curiosity now and maybe creating a WOW effect for friends in the future. Spy stuff, all that stuff.

If ten years ago fingerprint scanners could be seen mainly in James Bond films, by now they have already become widespread in the mobile technology segment. Most smartphones, with the exception of the most budget ones, have been equipped with fingerprint sensors for several years now, built into the key under the screen or installed on the back side. Recently, models with a scanner integrated into the screen have begun to appear. However, for laptops and desktop PCs the situation is completely different. There are models on the market with this technology, but in most cases they belong to corporate lines, so they are quite expensive. Luckily, there's a simple solution: the tiny scanner can be used with almost any Windows computer.

Tiny sizes

Made in the form of a miniature USB adapter. It resembles tiny wireless modules for mice and keyboards or compact USB drives. This device will fit into any wallet or pocket.

Record response speed

In addition to compactness, one of the key advantages of the system is the fast fingerprint recognition time: it takes only 0.05 seconds. According to the manufacturer, this is a record figure among similar devices. From a formal point of view, processing occurs without any delay at all: immediately after the finger touches the reading surface, the user is identified.

Scan from any angle (360 degrees)

In addition to its record-breaking response speed, the fingerprint reader's strengths also include ease of use. The sensor is configured in such a way that it can scan a fingerprint from any angle. Thanks to this, there is no need to place your finger in any particular way. You can store up to ten prints in the device's memory.

Versatility and Compatibility

Comes with convenient software. It is compatible with operating systems Windows 7, 8.1 and 10. The software package is automatically installed on your computer, after which you can begin working with the device. To register a new fingerprint, you will need to touch the surface of the reader 18–20 times so that it examines the pattern in detail.

Various use cases

The developers have provided various protection options using a fingerprint scanner. For example, you can restrict access to certain files or folders, networks or sites. In addition, you can protect external drives.

The reader performs its main function quite well - it allows you to configure fingerprint login, access to an encrypted disk, and automatic password entry when entering a site (though only in IE). Combined with such a cost, it is an ideal solution for home computer, if you want to set up separate login, you don’t want long passwords. Or for “playing around”, “surprising colleagues”, of course.

However, it should be noted that the scanner itself does not increase security - for this you will also need to set a long, hack-proof password.
On the other hand, by setting a complex password, the user will not have to tell it, thereby eliminating an additional security threat - since the user does not know the password, it will be very difficult for him to lose it.
I've already imagined long rows of computers in the office with fingerprint scanners. And it’s difficult to get in, and they don’t forget passwords (and don’t hang pieces of paper with them on the monitor).

How to set up a fingerprint scanner to log into Windows?

Windows 10 offers to eliminate the need to enter a password when logging into your computer.
Biometric authentication offers several methods:
- according to facial parameters,
- along the iris of the eye,
- by fingerprint.
In parallel, Microsoft is promoting its version of a universal authentication service: “Passport”.

By logging into it only once, the user can then log in without additional effort to those applications and websites that support it.
In the absence of biometric sensors on the computer, you will still be prompted to enter a password.
We'll look at fingerprint authentication.

For this purpose in Windows 10 there is Windows system Hello.

First you need to set up Windows Hello:
1. Click the “Start” button (with the Windows logo icon).
2. Next, select the items: “Settings” - “Accounts” - “Login Options”.

1. If the password for logging in account was not installed, then you need to set: “Password” - “Add”.
2. Next, “PIN code” - “Add” - enter the code you created twice - “Ok”.
It is necessary since the mechanism is implemented based on the “Passport” service.

Protection activated.

Now in “Accounts” - “Login Options” - select “Windows Hello”.

Will open Windows window Hello with a greeting and an invitation to personalize your device, making it unique and more secure with a fingerprint rather than a password.

Enter the previously specified PIN code and press “Enter”.

Now you need to scan your fingerprints.
In “Accounts” - “Login Options” - select “Fingerprint”.

You will be prompted to perform a scan.
You need to place your finger on the scanner.

For each finger, you need to do this operation eight times so that the results are as reliable as possible.
This is necessary in case one of the prints is damaged as a result of a cut or other actions.
Click “Close” to complete the Hello setup.

Setting up account login Windows entry 10 completed.
Now after setup, you can log in by quickly swiping your finger across the computer's fingerprint scanner.

In case scanning does not work, you can always use your account password to log in.
We would also like to draw your attention to the fact that settings options in Windows may change over time.

If your computer does not have a fingerprint scanning device (fingerprint scanner), then you can purchase a compact USB fingerprint scanner for your PC, for example, Bio-Key from BIO-Key International: SideSwipe Mini Fingerprint Reader, SideTouch Fingerprint Reader and EcoID Fingerprint Reader.

They connect to a USB port and are miniature pads with a fingerprint scanner.
The only difference can be in the scanning technique: drag your finger across the pad or simply touch.
