1) DjVu Small

1. First, click on the Open Files button (red one in the screenshot below) and select the pictures that you want to pack into this format.

2. The second step is to select the location where the created file will be saved.

3. Choose what to do with your files. Document -> Djvu- convert documents to djvu format; Djvu Decoding - this item must be selected when you select a djvu file instead of pictures in the first tab in order to extract it and get its contents.

4. Select encoding profile- choice of compression quality. The best option would be to experiment: take a couple of pictures and try to compress them, if the quality suits you, then you can compress the entire book with the same settings. If not, then try to increase the quality. Dpi- this is the number of points; the higher this value, the better the quality, and the larger the size of the source file.

5. Convert- a button that starts the creation of a compressed djvu file. The time for this operation will depend on the number of pictures, their quality, PC power, etc. It took about 1-2 seconds for 5-6 pictures. on an average powerful computer today. Another good program for creating and extracting djvu files. Many users find it not as convenient and visual as DjVu Small, but we will still consider the process of creating a file in it.

1. Open image files that you scanned, downloaded, borrowed from friends, etc. Important! First, open just 1 image out of all the ones you want to convert!

Important point! Many people cannot open pictures in this program, because... By default it opens djvu files. To open other graphic files, simply put the value in the file types column as in the picture below.

2. Once your one picture has been opened, you can add the rest. To do this, in the left window of the program you will see a column with a small preview of your picture. Right-click on it and select “Insert page after” - add pages (pictures) after this one.

Then select all the pictures you want to compress and add them to the program.

3. Now click on file/Encode As Djvu - encode in Djvu.

In the next step you are asked to specify the location where the encoded file will be saved. By default, you are offered the save folder from which you added the image files. You can choose that too.

Now you need to select the quality with which the program will compress the images. It is best to choose it experimentally (since many people have different tastes and it is useless to give specific numbers). Just leave it at default first, compress the files - then check if you're happy with the quality of the document. If you are not satisfied, then increase/decrease the quality and check again, etc. until you find your balance between file size and quality.

The files in the example were compressed to 28kb! Pretty good, especially for those who want to save disk space or those who have slow Internet.

But it’s surprising: the DjVu format (pronounced “déjà vu”) has been used since the late 90s, but it gained fame and recognition only almost 5 years later. And if until recently, the main stream of documentation and e-books was in PDF format, now you can already find giant portals filled with gigabytes of various literature in DjVu format.

DjVu – a little history

DJVU technology was developed by the company in 1996, but some time later it was sold to the company, which to this day is considered the main supplier of professional programs of this class. However, due to the fact that the DjVu standard is open, over time a lot of alternative free and shareware appeared on the market. free programs. We will get to know some of them a little later.

A few words about the scope and technology of DjVu

Why is it so beneficial to use encoding in the DjVu format and why is it not rational to store a scanned document in TIFF format or compress it into JPEG? The answer is simple - it's all about the volume of information. Despite the fact that global, and after them Russian, Internet channels have noticeably increased, the issue of file size is still quite acute. And the DjVu format allows you to significantly reduce the size of the document, and, as a result, the time it takes to send or download it.

Thus, a color page compressed by DjVu weighs 5-10 times less than one converted to jpeg, and a black and white page weighs about 10-20 times. Compared to PDF, DJVU also has a gain, usually on the order of 3-10 times. A more detailed comparison of the different formats can be seen in this figure:

The secret is that during conversion, the image is decomposed into components, each of which is compressed in a certain way and according to a certain algorithm:

• Mask - the text itself, diagrams, and graphics are stored here. That is, the clearest details of the image. Has the highest resolution.
• Background , which stores the document's background and illustrations. Resolution is significantly reduced.
• Foreground contains information about the color scheme of the mask. The strongest compression is applied to this layer.

Another undeniable advantage of DjVu over regular graphic image is the ability to recognize text. This technology is called OCR (optical character recognition- optical character recognition) - that is, recognized text from a DjVu document can be copied.

From all of the above, I think it is clear that the DjVu format is extremely beneficial to use for storing multi-page documents, subject to a limited amount of digital media, for sending over communication channels, and simply for more comfortable and fast work with files.

Usually, it is not fiction that is distributed online in this way, but books containing drawings, graphs, formulas and other things that are quite difficult to convert into digital format using text recognition programs.

At first, I thought that this strange djvu() format was an ordinary set of raster images (photos) that were the result of scanning a book. But in this case the file size would be very large, and we do not observe this.

What is a file with such a mysterious extension and how can you open it to start reading the information contained in “déjà vu”, and what programs are best to use. I will try to answer all these questions in this article.

What is a Djvu file?

It turns out that djvu was developed about fifteen years ago and is a very successful mixture of test and graphic formats. In principle, when digitizing books, two scenarios are possible:

1. Perform text recognition on a scanned page and save it using compression algorithms, which allows you to get a very small weight of the final file. The downside is that you lose images, backgrounds, marginal notes, dog-ears, and other things that may be important in some cases. But it will be possible to conduct a full search using recognized texts.
2. You can save scanned texts as pictures, for which these or tiff are suitable. However, the weight of even one scanned page will be prohibitively high if we want to maintain quality. Well, it will be impossible to search through texts.

Djvu combines the advantages of the methods described above, while having virtually no disadvantages. Format Deja vu can be classified as text-graphic, which in itself already sounds unusual, but it promises a lot of dividends. Judge for yourself:

1. The original scanned image is compressed in Djvu ten times more tightly than it would be using JPEG, and its quality remains virtually unchanged. At the same time, jpeg will definitely blur both text and graphics, and everything that is possible, and our hero will leave everything in its original form.
2. An A4 sheet, scanned and converted to déjà vu, will weigh around 50 kilobytes (read about that) if the source had color graphics (or background), and around 10 kilobytes if it was black and white. Brilliant, and this is taking into account the fact that the scanning was carried out in a high resolution of 300 DPI. The same file saved in tiff format (without loss of quality) would weigh several hundred times more.
3. The Djvu file contains a text layer through which you can conduct a full search, and if you wish, you can leave only it (removing the color mask and background information), which will further reduce the size.

All this is achieved thanks to a rather original approach. I could be wrong, but in my opinion it is as follows:

1. Separate the text of the page and its background. The algorithm monitors many factors and, with the right settings, can even rip out the text component from the cover of a magazine, where words can also be used as a background.
2. The text is saved in a one-bit version (black and white) and is compressed quite tightly.
3. The background is saved separately and compressed a little less efficiently.
4. Information about the color of the text and illustrations used in the book is also compressed, but using a different algorithm.
5. As I already mentioned, the Djvu format provides a separate text field, thanks to which you can search through scanned books.

But the questions of creation and principles of data formation in déjà vu files are of interest to us insofar as, and it will be much more interesting to find out how they can be open and read Djvu.

Naturally, for this purpose special reading programs (readers) are used, which can be used both for the computer and for mobile devices based on Android or iOS (ipad, iPhone). It’s convenient, after all, on the way home or to work to increase your level of education by reading a smart book on your mobile phone.

How to open Djvu - reading programs on a computer

There are several programs that are focused on working only with déjà vu files, but there are a number of universal solutions that allow you to read books in almost any form. There are also Djvu editors that allow you to edit or even create your own masterpieces.

In general, they make it possible to abandon all this wealth (including), but not everyone pays attention to this when installing the program. Of course, with the same one it all looks even more intrusive, but the leading Runet search engine has also already filled all the free programs with its add-ons to the point of “don’t play around.”



As I already mentioned, Djvu can have a text layer embedded, so when reading books containing it, you can search by words and phrases.

On the left, WinDjView has a navigator with page thumbnails, and at the top there is a toolbar where you can open a new file, change the scale and type of display of pages (endless feed or imitation of a book spread), and also rotate them, if necessary, at an angle multiple of 90 degrees.

What’s noteworthy is that this deja vu reader opens new books in new tabs, which allows you to work with several materials at once in one program window. There is also the ability to make bookmarks and leave comments (from the right-click context menu). You can use Magnifier from the toolbar and full screen mode viewing (in this case, pages can be scrolled with a simple mouse click).

If you select “File” - “Settings” from the WinDjView program menu, then on the second tab you can set the inversion of colors (for example, in order to read white text on a black background), as well as adjust the brightness, contrast or gamma for better perception of the document in Djvu format.



At the beginning of the article, I mentioned that in déjà vu, the scanned document is broken down into a black and white text component, a background, and foreground color information. So, in WinDjView all this can be clearly seen by selecting “view” - “mode” from the menu.

The latest current version dates back to 2005 (version 2.0.0.26) and its compatibility with modern operating systems is not guaranteed, although on mine Windows Vista it still works, although not as quickly as its modern counterpart described just above. It does not require installation and works directly from the folder where you unpacked the archive with the program.



During installation, you need to check the box that you will not use this reader for commercial purposes, so as not to pay for the program.



Well, STDU Viewer will also ask you which file extensions you would like to associate it with, except for deja vu.



In principle, there is nothing so global in this reader that would not be in WinDjView, but... Firstly, it’s captivating a huge number of formats, which can be opened and read using this program.

Secondly, a very convenient and thoughtful interface.



Almost all of the reader’s functionality is displayed in the form of toolbars located around the entire perimeter of the program window. The place where thumbnails of the pages of the book you are reading are usually displayed, has as many as six tabs located at the bottom.

For some reason, I mostly manage to read books on the road, but there are always a lot of other, more important and interesting things to do. In this regard, I was faced with the task of downloading some suitable déjà vu reader for my beloved iPad, received as a gift from Profit Partner, but also in addition to everything - for an Android phone.

At the same time, I try to try all the free options for programs and applications before coming to the conclusion that I have no other option but to part with my hard-earned money. Actually, the main candidates for the place of Djvu are e-readers for iOS on the Internet. DjVU Book Reader.

The DjVu format appeared quite a long time ago, but has gained popularity recently. The format was created by AT&T and sold to LizardTech, which created several programs to work with this format. The DjVu Solo program was the first trial program for creating files in the DjVu format, after which LizardTech created the commercial program Document Express, the professional sixth version of which was released not so long ago. The DjVu Solo 3.1 program is currently not being developed further. Many attribute the slow spread of the DjVu format to the fact that the Document Express Pro 6 program is now asking for incredible amounts of money. At the same time, the DjVu Solo 3.1 program allows you to create files in the DjVu format, although it does not understand Russian texts, that is, it does not recognize the text and does not separate it into a separate layer, treating it as image elements. But it doesn't matter much.

So, what is the DjVu format and what is it for?

Imagine the following example: you have a rare technical book, and you want to convert it into digital form, in other words, scan it. There are no problems with scanning. But further difficulties may arise. What are the scanned files? These are the most common images, usually in JPG format. What is any technical book: text, drawings, formulas. We won’t talk about tables, since they are closest to the text. The programs ABBYY Fine Reader 10.0, ABBYY Scan To Office 2.0, CuneiForm 12 Master and many others are designed for text recognition. These programs can also recognize drawings and import them into a text document. But here there are several “buts”. Firstly, the text is recognized, but it is usually imported into a text document in the form of a font other than the one in which it was typed in the document, but the one selected for import. If there are many fonts in a book, they may lose their original parameters. Secondly, many characters are still recognized with large errors or not recognized at all. This mainly applies to the Greek font, superscripts and subscripts, etc. But we warned at the very beginning that we were going to digitize a technical book, that is, a book usually stuffed with various formulas. And thirdly, you will most likely have to say goodbye to the decorative design of the book when recognizing text. All this will have to be restored in a text document after manual recognition, that is, for a long time. To do this, you need to have exactly the same fonts on your PC, waste your time and, as a result, still not get the design style that was in the book.

That is, we are convinced that recognizing a complex technical document most likely leads to a dead end. No matter how powerful recognition programs are now, they still have limitations.

So we're back to the original scanned files, which are stored as images. Another way is to create a book from these images. But images take up a huge amount of disk space. Store a book of 800 pages, 2 pages in one file - 400 files. If each file takes up approximately 200 KB, then the total size will be approximately 80 MB.

The DjVu format allows you to bypass all the shortcomings of both text recognition and creating a book from images. This format occupies an intermediate position between text recognition and image storage. Scanned pages are stored as images, but take up approximately 10 times less space than the most cost-effective image formats. For example: we scanned a book as a spread (2 pages). In JPG format, the file size was approximately 200 KB. When converting this image to DjVu format, the volume became more than 10 times smaller: from 16 to 21 KB. However, the quality of the pages did not deteriorate. The pages will appear as they appeared on the scanned page, that is, with shadows at the fold. In addition, the DjVu Solo 3.1 program allows you to arrange a book page by page. That is, the book becomes a single whole and there is no need to remember which pages are stored in which file.

Note: speaking of shadows on the double pages. Research in recent years has shown that it is easier for a person to read e-books that imitate a real book.

DjVu Solo 3.1 program splits the image into three layers: foreground, background and black and white mask. The mask stores the text first. This is done as follows: characters of the same font are sorted, and only one of each character is remembered, and in place of all the other same characters, the addresses of their location on the book page are remembered. Thus, much less memory is needed than to store the entire text. If the text uses several fonts, then memorization is performed for each font separately. Illustrations and paper texture are preserved in the background. Therefore, those characters that are not recognized as characters are remembered in the background. The volume of a multi-page book is many times smaller than the sum of the volumes of individual pages if they were stored on separate pages. This effect is achieved by storing only one collection of characters from each font.

All layers are located on top of each other and visually when viewing a book page it is impossible to distinguish them from each other.

Getting the first page of a book

After starting the program, the program working window opens (Fig. 156).

The working window opens empty, since page images still need to be obtained. You can obtain the original images, not necessarily using this program, but scan them in any program that allows scanning. If scanning was performed previously, then you must click on the button Open(Open) () and select start graphic file. The DjVu Solo 3.1 program understands several popular graphic formats: JPG, GIF, TIFF, BMP, PICT, PNM.

If you want to scan source pages from the DjVu Solo 3.1 program, then click on the button Scan(Scan) (). After this, the standard scanning program is launched, that is, DjVu Solo 3.1 does not have a built-in driver for the scanner. After scanning is completed, the image is loaded into the working window of the DjVu Solo 3.1 program. Please note that an image is being loaded that has yet to be converted to DjVu format.

Note: if you have several scanners connected to your PC, then run the command File → Select Source(File → Select Source) and select one of the scanners.

To convert the received (or opened) image to DjVu format, you need to run the command File → Encode As DjVu(File → Convert to DjVu). Save the resulting file.

Getting the next pages of a book

To scan the next image, press the button again Scan(Scan) (). Each scanned image is placed in a separate window. Therefore, after each scan, you need to convert the resulting images into DjVu format, save and close the window with such an image after saving. As soon as you try to save the resulting image, the program will offer to convert this image to DjVu format when saving. That is, you should still have an open book with pages converted to DjVu. To continue the book, execute one of the commands in the menu section Edit(Edit):

• Append Page(s)- insert pages at the end of the book. It doesn't matter which page is selected in the preview window;
• Insert Page (s) Before- insert pages before the selected page in the preview panel;
• Insert Page(s) After- insert pages after the selected page in the preview panel.

Note: The preview panel is located on the left side of the working window. The pages are presented in the form of icons. To disable or re-enable the preview panel, run the command Thumbnails→ Show Thumbnails(Icons → Show icons). The panel with pages is visible if the command Show Thumbnails checkbox is checked. To change the boundaries between the preview pane and open page, place the mouse on the vertical line separating these panels so that a double-headed arrow appears. Click on the mouse and, without releasing it, drag left or right.

After executing any of these commands, a window opens Open, in which you need to select one or more files in DjVu format and click on the button Open. Once individual pages are included in the book, the original DjVu files are no longer needed and can be deleted. If several pages are connected to a book at once, then the source files for them are selected using the Ctrl key: select the first file, then press the Ctrl key and, without releasing it, click on all the opened files in turn. Release the Ctrl key.

If some pages were included in the set by mistake, they can be removed from the book. Select such pages in the list of pages and right-click on them. From the context menu that appears, run the command Delete Page(s).

Navigation through book pages

To navigate through the pages of the book, you can use the toolbar buttons or menu section commands Navigate(Navigation). The menu section provides the entire list of navigation commands (key combinations are indicated in brackets) (button on the toolbar):

To view pages by layer in the toolbar and menu section View → Display(View → Display) the following modes are available:

If some layers are missing, then this layer will appear empty on the page. For example, in mode Color Mode shadows are visible on the facing pages. If you do not need them, then turn on the mode Black &White Mode and the shadow on the spread will not be visible.

Reading a book or watching a slide show

Before reading a book, click on the page area (on the right side of the working window). If you do not do this, the command to read the book may not be available. After this the command is executed Slide Show→ Begin slideshow(Slideshow → Start Slideshow) or press the F 2 key on your PC keyboard. Book pages are viewed on the entire monitor screen. Page turning is done with mouse clicks. After flipping through the last page of the book, the program returns to the working program window. To force a return to the working program window, press the Esc key on your PC keyboard. Book pages are viewed in the mode that was previously selected in the working window before reading started. However, the viewing mode can be changed while reading a book. To do this, you need to call the context menu of the pages and place the mouse on the section Display(Display) and select the desired reading mode or page scale ( Zoom(Scale)). In the context menu in reading mode, you can also change the viewing scale.

Hyperlinks

We will start not with the hyperlinks themselves, but thematically adjacent to them - these are highlighted areas. Highlighted areas are areas that need to be highlighted in some way so that the reader pays attention to them. The highlight is done in a color, yellow by default. There is a button to create the backlight. Highlight Area(Highlight Area) () on the toolbar. Create a rectangular area on the page to which you want to highlight some fragment of the page. There is no need to create this exact rectangular area, since it is much easier to adjust it later using the tool Edit mode(Edit mode) (). Once you have finished creating the highlighted area, a window will immediately open. Highlight Area Properties(Highlight Area Properties). We will look at the parameters of this window a little later, but for now just click on the button OK. Select a tool Edit mode(Edit mode) (). After this, place the mouse pointer on one of the corner or middle markers located around the perimeter of the highlighted area. After this, a bidirectional arrow should appear (Fig. 157). Click and drag the mouse in the desired direction. To delete a highlight area, right-click on it and from the context menu that appears, execute the command HyperLinks→ Delete(Hyperlinks → Delete). To edit the parameters of a highlight area, call the context menu of this area and run the command HyperLinks→ Edit(Hyperlinks → Edit).

Hyperlinks allow you to create in a book Additional information without increasing the size of the file in which the book is stored. There are three tools for creating hyperlinks: Rectangular Hyperlink(Rectangular hyperlink) (), Oval Hyperlink(Oval hyperlink) (), Polygon Hyperlink(Polygonal hyperlink) (). Rectangular and oval areas are created diagonally from one corner to the other. A polygonal hyperlink area is created by clicking the corners of the polygon. Completing creation is done by double clicking the mouse. After creating the hyperlink, a window opens Hyperlink Properties(Hyperlink Properties), whose parameters we are skipping for now. Click on the button OK.

After creating a hyperlink, its borders can be easily adjusted using the tool Edit mode(Edit mode) (). Viewing hyperlinks can only be done in book preview mode. To do this, click on the button Preview mode(Preview mode) (). When you hover your mouse over the hyperlink area, a tooltip appears (Fig. 158). To finish viewing the hint, click the mouse, otherwise the hint will remain on the screen, not only on the page on which the hyperlink area is located, but on any page in the book. Until the mouse is clicked, that is, until the previous hyperlink is closed, you may have problems viewing the next link.

Setting options for hyperlinks and highlight areas

After creating hyperlinks or highlight areas, a window opens Hyperlink Properties(Hyperlink Properties) or Highlight Area Properties(Highlight Area Properties). Until now, we have not configured the parameters in these windows, but immediately clicked on the button OK. Let's look at these parameters in the table (Table 4).

Printing a document

To print a document in DjVu format, do one of the following:

Run the command File→ Print(File → Print) from the main menu;

After performing any of these actions, a window will open Seal(Fig. 159).

On the list Name printer is selected. Please note that a printer can be not only a real printer, but also a virtual one. You can use a virtual printer to convert a file from DjVu format to PDF format. For example, you may need to convert a file from DjVu format to Microsoft Word format. You cannot convert directly, but you can first convert the file to PDF format, and then convert from PDF format to Microsoft Word format. For example, this can be done using the ABBYY Transformer 3.0 program.

On the panel Print range specify the pages to print. To start printing, click on the button OK.
